Abstraktit ja puhujaesittelyt / Abstracts and speaker introductionsGuy A. Boy, Human-Centered Design Institute, Florida Institute of Technology; Human-Centered Design, NASA Kennedy Space Center: Context-sensitive information systemsIn this keynote, I will address the issue of “context” in documentation systems and more generally in information transfer among human and machine agents. How do we exchange information? What is context sensitive information? How to build systems that are context sensitive? All these questions will be addressed. Context can be expressed as relations between objects and agents. Distinctions are made between historical, verbal and social contexts. I will illustrate theoretical concepts using what we did in the Computer Integrated Documentation project at NASA. Context can be investigated at different levels of abstraction such as interaction, interpretation and construction. In fact, information is exchanged through three types of processes: communication, cooperation and coordination. Writing technical and operation documentation that support various kinds of agents (human operators) has become hypermedia design, and reading documentation has become human-computer interaction. Current information technology changes the way we used to handle documentation; we now have information systems supporting human performance. I will present the concept of active design documents that document both the design process and its various solutions. Hanna Risku, Danube University Krems: User Participation for Effective Communication: Cognitive Foundations and Practical ImplementationThis presentation takes a closer look at the human being as user and reader of technical information, focusing in particular on the role played by human cognitive capabilities, context, and interactive behavior. If we were to take contemporary Cognitive Science approaches like Situated/Embedded Cognition seriously in information design, we would not only have to take account of the specific user group (now common and accepted practice), but would also have to include more participative design practices. Thus, this presentation puts forward the claim that a serious consideration of the situatedness of human cognition in a given context fundamentally changes our assumptions and actions regarding the role of users. However, aside from verbal recognition of the importance of the users, it is still not common practice to actually include users and their context professionally and systematically in the information design process. To illustrate the practical application of participative design, examples of concrete information design projects are presented. These include the participative design of traffic signs, interactive user interfaces, network visualization software, and ticket vending machines. Anssi Ahlberg, Nokia: Developing a new language on a smartphone - requirement management viewpointWe all use our mobile phones/iPods, laptops and other personal devices in the language that we are most comfortable with. Introducing a new language on a smartphone is much more than just slapping on a set of translated texts. My prsentation gives a brief overview of the factors defining whether a new language is introduced or not, what needs to be done and where to support the language, how the requirements are formed and, once implemented, how the language is then maintained. As the whole chain also employs a lot of the members of the society, so in the course of the presentation I identify the professions and positions where people in our line of work can thrive. About Anssi Ahlberg:Anssi Ahlberg currently works as the experience owner of Nokia’s Symbian smartphones’ localization and internationalization support. He has over ten years of experience in the field of technical communications, having worked as translator, technical writer, project manager for various documentation, information and internationalization projects, and product manager for the language and localization support. He has been working with various aspects of Symbian smartphones language support since 2004. About Nokia:At Nokia, we are committed to connecting people. We combine advanced technology with personalized services that enable people to stay close to what matters to them. Every day, more than 1.3 billion people connect to one another with a Nokia device – from mobile phones to advanced smartphones and high-performance mobile computers. Today, Nokia is integrating its devices with innovative services through Ovi www.ovi.com, including music, maps, apps, email and more. Nokia's NAVTEQ is a leader in comprehensive digital mapping and navigation services, while Nokia Siemens Networks provides equipment, services and solutions for communications networks globally. Anssi Ahlberg, Nokia: An evolving case: localising for a large SW organisation that is going agileThe localisation organisation at Nokia's Symbian Devices had fine-tuned its processes to be fast, efficient, cost-effective and reasonably flexible - well-suited for a world of waterfalls. In order to be able to meet the customers' expectations better and to be able to decrease the time to market, Symbian Devices' has started adopting agile software development principles. This adoption is still ongoing, and lessons learned so far dictate the way forward. The ongoing change has also made the localisation team to re-evaluate its processes and ways of working to be able to work in a more agile way. My presentation aims to be neither a collection of best practises nor a set of how-to's, but it outlines the change drivers and the changes so far, discusses some of the problems encountered as well as some of the acknowledged shortcomings the suggested solutions to these. Ryan Gold: Visually Documenting How Your Organization FunctionsIn order to truly understand how an organization works, it is essential to also understand its context.
Process maps can be used for more than just outlining procedures; they are also effective in visually documenting organizational structures, functions and interactions. They also facilitate the analysis of current state reality (showing gaps and redundancies) and provide the ability to perform impact analyses of alternative future states to aid in complex decision-making. In this presentation, I will demonstrate how Business Process Modeling relies on the same basic skill set as effective technical communications, and in many ways represents the future of our industry. About Ryan Gold:Mr. Ryan Gold is Vice President of Business Development at SDI Global Solutions with strong experience in building and managing cross-business product and service portfolios, defining and implementing business strategies, leading change management initiatives and developing partner relationships. He has been involved in technical documentation, technical training, document management and knowledge systems since 1995. About SDI Global Solutions:SDI Global Solutions is focused on providing our clients a competitive advantage by improving their customer's total product experience. This approach ensures our ability to maintain our strict quality standards while offering our customers the best value possible for all aspects of knowledge capture and management. Timo Happonen, Nokia Siemens Networks: Installation Documentation Rich Media ImplementationWhy not creating it as rich media instead of an ordinary document? Our management challenged us to start renewing our technical customer documentation by finding alternative ways of presenting the content. We accepted the challenge and took our first steps into that direction. This presentation shows what we did and how we did it. About Timo Happonen:Timo Happonen is a Documentation Specialist at Nokia Siemens Networks and has about 15 years of experience in various roles and tasks in the customer documentation domain, and still learning... Eija Hartikainen, Anne Karppinen, Nokia Siemens Networks: Self-documenting products and Design solutions for product-integrated user assistanceThe product we work with, NetAct, utilizes many 3rd party components, and own R&D is literally world-wide. The ease of implementing common solutions for user assistance (from both technical documentation staff's perspective, as well as R&D staff's perspective) is therefore key to successful user assistance. Anne will introduce the basics of self-documenting products and how we’ve tried to set requirements for R&D teams so that software itself would facilitate the “self-documenting” aspect. Eija then moves on with the theme and explains how NetAct has moved from traditional online help to system meta-data based solutions and end-to-end SW context-sensitivity. She will also demo user assistance solutions "under development". Self-documenting as a term is new: we do not mean usability (even if that might come into the picture) but rather the concept that many of the products we work with actually carry a lot of metadata on their functionality "inside" themselves. This data is usually only available for those people who just happen to know where to find it, the gurus, the really knowledgeable ones. How to make this kind of information more transparent, more available and more "usable" is the key to the approach, and I want to outline some of the initiatives we have started or already implemented in this field. About Eija Hartikainen and Anne Karppinen:Eija comes from Nokia Siemens Networks, and works with a very large software product, NetAct. She currently works as a Product Manager for documentation. Anne currently works with BSO Technical support, but has worked with documentation requirement setting even from that location. Michael Klemme, Acrolinx: Quality Information: Going Global Efficiently

Timo-Pekka Leinonen, WordDive: Multimodal Association in Language LearningWhen we learn languages, the process is much faster and natural, if new words are related directly to the corresponding real life concepts. The focus of this presentation is on creating those associations in the learner's brain using multimodal stimuli. We will talk about activating the same senses in different ways and support the presentation with concrete www.WordDive.com examples. The approach will be extended to character based languages using Japanese as concrete example. Finally we will talk about internationalization and localization in the context of language learning where different shades and cultural context of vocabulary sets especially tight requirements. Establishment of a joint-stock Internet startup will be covered in the discussion part, if that is of interest for the audience. About Timo-Pekka Leinonen:Timo-Pekka has been developing language learning applications as a hobby with variable intensity since 1987. Past 19 years he has been employed by Nokia in R&D and business management related roles including expat assignments in Germany, Japanand USA. About Juha Rintala:I work as Project Manager / Team Leader in visualisation and multimedia projects. About Citec:Citec Information Oy Ab offers a wide range of information services for both internal company information management and for product data management, from consultation to implementation. Teemu Ruohola, Delfoi: Faster, cheaper and more intuitive technical documentation using 3D CAD data in publishing processMost companies are using PDM/PLM systems to store their CAD data today. There is a big potential to use this data is more efficiently. Many drawings, animations and other input to documentation can be created from CAD related data. This means that the technical documentation can be done in parallel with the product design process without having physical prototypes. This enables also automatic updates – when the 3D data changes all the related documentation is updated automatically. This presentation shows how 3D data can be distributed e.g. for technical writers and illustrators and how new tools are helping in their everyday work. These tools also enable to create interactive material e.g. animated working and maintenance instructions. About Delfoi:Delfoi develops, markets and supports Digital Manufacturing solutions and related consulting services to help our customers increase their productivity and improve quality. DELFOI has offices in Finland, Sweden and Germany. Delfoi resells Dassault Systemes 3DVIA and DELMIA product brands (see more: www.3ds.com). Digital content is becoming more dynamic, interactive, and entertaining. Embedding and linking animations and video in support content brings excellent opportunities for technical communicators to help, encourage, and engage their audience more effectively. Information design and technical writing skills serve as a strong foundation for planning and designing rich media. The methodology used for studying user needs and planning topics is the same; the difference comes mainly in the visual focus and implementation. The overall structure of a video tutorial and text-based use case may be similar; for example, it may lead on benefits, give step-by-step instructions, and wrap up with tips, next steps, or related topics. About Jane Wasström:Jane Wasström is a Development Manager for end-user support content at Nokia Corporation. In the Content Management organisation, she is part of a team that collaborates with other Nokia functions to develop new concepts for online, in-device, and print channels. Jane has over 10 years of experience working in the field of technical communication. In previous roles at Nokia, she has been a technical editor, terminology coordinator, and language specialist. Salary Survey (AKAVA, Specia, KAJ, YTN)The Finnish Technical Communications Society along with Ylemmät Toimihenkilöt YTN ry is conducting a salary survey for people working in technical communications. It is open to all so please forward to colleagues who might not be members of either FTCS or YTN. The aim of the survey is to chart salaries and contractual terms of members who work in the field of technical communications.
