Call for Papers: The Business of Technical Communications

The Finnish Technical Communications Society is arranging a two-day seminar in Helsinki on 21-22 May 2012. This year the seminar theme is The Business of Technical Communications.

In addition to mastering competencies in writing and information design, technical communicators today need to have a keen business sense, both about the industries in which they work as well as the contribution of technical communications to those industries. Through sharing of best practices and ideas for professional skills development, this seminar will help participants develop their ability to identify and focus on the key aspects of their work that contribute to their companies’ bottom line.

The organisers invite papers on topics such as the following:

  • Use cases on how technical communications professionals help/helped their company achieve its business goals
  • Understanding standards and legal requirements: how technical communications professionals contribute in other ways than content creation
  • Usability; serving the customers
  • New and innovative business models for technical communications
  • Business skills that technical communications professionals would need

As in the past, other presentations on technical communication theory and practice are also welcome. In addition, the society is considering arranging workshops this year on topics of interest to members and seminar attendees. We invite you to propose topics for the workshops. Also let us know, if you would like to facilitate a workshop. Send your proposal (no more than 400 words) or idea for a workshop by 9 March 2012 to stvyinfo@stvy.fi. Also give information about the length of your presentation: either 30 + 15 min. for discussion or 45 + 15 min. Notification of acceptance will be sent by the end of March. Accepted proposals will be posted on the society website prior to the seminar. Final presentations must be delivered to the same address by 4 May 2012. Seminar presentations will be made available to society members on the society website after the seminar.

We will also be inviting companies and organisations to introduce their products and services in the company exhibition held on Monday 21 May 2012. If you are interested in this possibility, please send a message by 9 March 2012 to stvyinfo@stvy.fi.

Finnish and English are the working languages of the seminar. Information on registration, payment, accommodation and other practicalities will be posted on the society website and mailing list in April 2012.

If you have any questions, please send them to stvyinfo@stvy.fi.
